Sarah Annie Nash was born in Llawhaden in 1886 to Henry and Caroline Nash.  The 1911 census saw her living in the General Hospital in Cheltenham as a Hospital Nurse.  

In December 1916 Tenby Parish Magazine reported  ‘Nurse Nash, daughter of Mr H. Nash, of New Hedges, was one of the Red Cross nurses on board the Britannic when she was sunk by German torpedoes in the Mediterranean.  It was a relief to her anxious parents when they received a telegram from Athens telling them she was among the saved.  This was Nurse Nash’s third voyage to the eastern sphere of hostilities in the Britannic’.

HMHS (His Majesty’s Hospital Ship) Britannic was sunk by German U-Boat U-73 on 21 November 1916 under the command of Kapitänleutnant Gustav Sieβ.  From its launch in June 1915 until it was scuttled at Pola on 30 October 1918, the U-boat sunk 18 ships and 3 warships.

Britannic was hit in the Kea Channel off the Greek Island of Kea and sank 55 minutes later, killing 30 people.  There were 1066 people on board, with 1036 survivors taken from the water and lifeboats.  At 48,158 gross register tonnage, she was one of the largest ships hit.

Fis Rhagfyr 1916 nodwyd yn y Tenby Parish Magazine, ‘Roedd Nyrs Nash, merch Mr H. Nash, o New Hedges, yn un o nyrsys y Groes Goch ar fwrdd y Britannic pan suddwyd y llong gan dorpido’r Almaenwyr ym Môr y Canoldir.  Roedd yn rhyddhad enfawr i’w rhieni pryderus pan gawsant delegram o Athen yn dweud wrthynt ei bod hi ymhlith y rhai a achubwyd. Y fordaith hon oedd trydedd taith Nyrs Nash i faes y gad yn y dwyrain canol ar y Britannic’. 

Cafodd HMHS (Llong Ysbyty Ei Mawrhydi) y Britannic ei suddo gan long danfor Almaenig yr U-73 ar 21 Tachwedd 1916 o dan reolaeth Kapitänleutnant Gustav Sieβ.  O’r adeg y lansiwyd y llong danfor fis Mehefin 1915 hyd nes y suddwyd hi yn Pola ar 30 Hydref 1918, roedd y llong wedi suddo 18 llong a 3 llong ryfel.

Cafodd y Britannic ei tharo yn Sianel Kea oddi ar Ynys Kea yng ngwlad Groeg, a suddodd 55 munud yn ddiweddarach, gan ladd 30 o bobl.  Roedd 1066 o bobl ar ei bwrdd, a goroesodd 1036 ohonynt o’r môr a’r badau achub. Yn pwyso 48,158 tunnell hi oedd un o’r llongau mwyaf a dargedwyd.
